When asked about what inspired them to write this song, Vanessa added the comment by saying that she had always wanted to write a song with Kathryn Garcia as well as perform it with her. Kathryn also admitted that she told herself that the next time she would write a song then it would be about something that can deliver a good message.
Kathryn also claimed that the song was about domestic violence and the message was to all people who were in a miserable relationship. One of the lines in the song is "Maybe there's a way out of this cage in where you live" along with a lot of positive, and at the same time, depressing lines.
Her co-writer Vanessa also said that she wanted to have the song with this kind of message because she knew someone who had suffered through a violent relationship and ended up taking their own life because they could not find a way to get out of it.
"If there was a way in which I could still play the song for her today. That would have made her reconsider everything" a tearful Vanessa exclaimed.
The meaning of the song also seemed to have a strong and powerful meaning for Kathryn as well since she had known quite a few people who had gone through the same type of trauma.
Kathryn and Vanessa first performed their single at a charity event in Los Angeles, California on February 26th in which they performed it especially for Stephanie Allyn (33) who has been through the same ordeal. They also dedicated it to other people who were going through the same issue.
Lyrics for "Be Brave" by Vanessa Thompson & Kathryn Garcia
[Vanessa]
You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast or the backlash
Of somebody's lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing's gonna hurt you
The way the words do
When they settle 'neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you
Chorus [Vanessa]
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
With what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
(Vocals)
I just want to see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I wanna see you be brave
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just wanna see you
I just want to see you be brave
[Kathryn]
Everybody's been there
Everybody's been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing
Bow down to the almighty
Don't run, just stop holding your tongue
[Kathryn]
Maybe there's a way out of this cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
[Vanessa]
Show me how big your brave is
Chorus [both]
[Vanessa]
And since your history of silence
Won't do you any good
Did you think it would?
[Kathryn]
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don't you tell them the truth?
Chorus [both]
LEFT: Vanessa manages to give a strong and powerful performance which matches with the song perfectly and in a positive way.
RIGHT: Kathryn gives a more softer performance when she sings it in a more acoustic vibe.
